Christmas decorations : safety comes first!
The end of the year is approaching and it means, among other things, celebrations with family and friends and Christmas decorations. These are a must-have addition to make this time of year warm and festive. However, certain decorations could expose you to risks.
Do you want to decorate the exterior of your house and use light shows that will amaze the entire neighbourhood? Your interior will shine in almost every room thanks to the light garlands that you reuse every year? Take note of our practical tips to ensure a happy and safe Christmas.
The choice of a natural Christmas tree
If you use a natural Christmas tree to decorate your living room, choose a freshly cut tree so that it is less dry and more waterlogged. A tree that is too dry indoors can be a source of fire.
Note that the lifespan of a natural tree, once cut, would be approximately 10 to 14 days. After this time, it begins to dry out.
Tips for your Christmas tree
- Store your natural tree in a pot filled with 2 to 3 liters of water.
- Water your Christmas tree as often as possible: ideally every day.
- Place your tree far from heat sources.
The choice of Christmas lights
Strings of lights, especially those that have been hanging around in our attic for many years, can pose certain fire risks. Fortunately, times have changed and these days, stores sell more reliable, safe and energy efficient lights.
Tips for using your lights
- Use lights that are in good condition and certified to comply with applicable standards (CSA). If you don't know how to check your old light strings, buy new ones.
- Avoid tangling extension cords and light wires and do not plug them into only one outlet.
- Use outlets equipped with a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) for your exterior connections.
- Unplug all your lights when you go to bed or when you go out.
Other tips for safe decorations for the whole family
- Avoid candles whenever possible. Yes, we know, the atmosphere is better with candles... but safety comes first.
- Choose decorations made of lead-free plastic or metal.
- If you have young children or pets, be careful of breakable materials or small “appetizing” objects.
These gestures will make your celebrations even safer while giving you peace of mind for beautiful, illuminated moments with your loved ones.
